Photos of quilt blocks

Here are the latest photos of my Mod Sampler blocks. I'm loving them so much. I just have one more log cabin block to finish before I can start sewing on the white sashing. It's coming along...

Weezer and (what else) quilting

This morning in the car, heading to Bubbe's, I was listening to "Beverly Hills" by Weezer. Penn says "Mommy, sing with us" and starts singing - she really liked the song.

So, I'm going to be making a modern, drunkard's path quilt using all solids. I'm really excited about it, but I know that I'm not going to want to give it away. I'm going to want to keep it. I might have to find another pattern to make for my brother and sister-in-law.

Why is it so hard to start back to exercising? I finally went to the Y this evening and did some uphill walking and recumbent biking  about 45 minutes in total, but I'm pretty sore right now. My body is tired. My brain is tired, too so that is good. I would like to get some sewing in before I pass out. g'night!

Penn Quotes

I don't want to forget these little gems so I better type them out for posterity.

Upon seeing a picture of herself from a year and a half ago, "Oh no! there's a problem with my teeth. Momma, my teeth fell out."

As I was putting on her shoes and she was falling off my lap: "Momma, my body!"

Auntie Storey came over and commented about the dog,
Storey: Benjamin, after all these years you still have to smell my crotch to know it's me
Penn: Auntie Storey, I can smell it too.

As she was waking up in her big girl bed to find she could get up and go to the door only to find that there was a gate in front of the door: "Momma, I'm trapped!" Then we took the gate from the door: "I'm free, I'm free!"

Moz and quilts and randomness

I've been looking around the net today and searching for inspiration. I'm such a flighty crafter. I mean, I'm not even finished with my fabulous (I just know it will be fabulous) Mod Sampler Quilt and I'm already looking for my next project. I wish I could just be happy with what I'm doing instead of looking for the next thing. Oh well... that's just how my mind works.

While listening to a lot of Morrissey (an AWESOME! set list mix made by my friend, Derek, to commemorate our first Morrissey concert) today I was struck with the feeling that I would like to go back in time. I feel like I've wasted a lot of time and need it back - to make more quilts and more knits and more friends and... I don't know, just MORE. I will get over it.

Penn has started having nightmares. Last night she was sure that she had ants in her bed. Poor girl. We had to stay up until 4 watching tv and eating snacks.

It's just kind of a strange day. I have strange hair and that always sets me up for a "wrong" feeling day. I cut some bangs this morning and the rest of my hair is kinda frizzy and uncooperative.

Reading and books and Star Trek

Okay, so every year I set a resolution (or a goal really) of reading 10 books. Last year, I don't even know that I read one book...(Fine! um... I did read one. It was by Tori Spelling, so I don't think it counts, hmmmm?... Anna, you'll have to weigh in on this). So this year I've started off well and I've read four already - I'm on track to meet or exceed my goal. Here is the list of books I've read as well as some that I'd like to read for 2012.
  • The Help - loved it. Hated the movie.
  • The Hunger Games - loved it. Haven't seen the movie (for reason, see above)
  • Catching Fire - loved it.
  • Mockingjay - liked it.
The next book I'm planning to start is The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz and I'm waiting on Fifty Shades of Grey from the library so I can get my mommy-porn on.

I think I will hold off on my book reading until I can watch the Star Trek (Original Series) movies, which I have never seen. Got a date with the Shat, and my Saturday popcorn (yum!)

Saturday? Oh No! It's Friday!

The girl and I got up this morning and had a lovely day. We sat around in our pajamas and watched many episodes of "The Wonder Pets" and "Team Umizoomi". It was great. I even made popcorn on the stove when she asked me to - this is usually reserved for weekend days - which I thought it was. I was so sure today was Saturday that I would've bet money on it. I know what you're thinking and the answer is "No, I wasn't partaking in any 4/20 festivities." I was just having a lovely pseudo-Saturday until my mother called and asked when I would be bringing the girl to her house. I said "Why would we come on Saturday?" to which my mom replied, "Oh, it's Saturday? No! The kids are at school." So... I'm at work now and just not feeling it. I want to go back to have the rest of my Saturday. I guess it's a good thing there is more popcorn.

Hologram TuPac?

Did everyone see Hologram TuPac @ Coachella but me? I just heard about it and I can't believe that that was not a person. Crazy. It is a little bit scary that they can make some dead person materialize in front of you. I suppose it is good news for all those people behind Elvis, Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. These artists can continue to be a cash cow - or even more so - in death. They can headline tours. They are never sick or hung over, you will never get a bad show and they don't have to see a cut of the profit. As my friend Angela would say, "N-I-C-E!"

Arrrrrgh!

I just messed up the cutting of my quilt. I think it is salvagable, but I don't know yet. It's gonna be a little frankenstein-y, but oh well - it will be a design feature.

I need one of those accucut machine thingys that just die cut the fabric - that would be so much easier and time saving. I need to win the lottery.

Working...sort of

I'm at work and all I can think about is my new quilt. I so want to get home to finish cutting the solid fabrics and laying out the design. I love when I feel so inspired and get such a sense of urgency about working on something. It's great to get the adrenaline pumping.

I'm starting to think about the playlist for my quilt. I'm listening to The Rolling Stones right now - Let It Bleed - it's a good one. I've also been listening to Split Enz and U2 with some Who and Squeeze thrown in for good measure. I hope I feel so inspired to include a CD with my quilt package. We'll just have to see. :)

New Quilt

Started working on a new quilt tonight. I'm so excited. I have reestablished a relationship with an old high school friend and he and his beau have been so nice to me that I want to make them something special. I think that I can make this quilt in three and a half weeks.

I cut the patterned fabrics tonight (except 1) and I'll cut the solids and the one pattern tomorrow night. Then I'll cut the sashing on Wednesday night and start sewing the blocks together. (pictures of cuts and fabrics on the way).

I love it when I feel so inspired to make something for someone. When the thought and the work and the materials come together to create the perfect gift for someone special. When they are totally not expecting it either - that is the best part. It's not for a holiday or any particular day of the year - it's for "just because".

I picked a palette of greens, blues and purples. It's going to be gorgeous. I can't wait to use my new darning foot to free-motion quilt the top.
